It is well-known that intimate partner violence (IPV) has a high co-occurrence rate with child maltreatment. However, few population-based studies have examined this issue and even fewer have considered complex patterns of family violence, including bi-directional IPV along with both parents’ abusive behavior toward a child. This study examines family IPV patterns and risk for use of corporal punishment, a strong and prevalent risk factor for child abuse that also is associated with many poor health outcomes for children.
